Busting CELPIP Myths

In a recent episode of CELPIP Live, we discussed some key CELPIP myths, and busted them! Frequent CELPIP myths that come up include:

MYTH: CELPIP wants to keep scores lower so test takers apply for re-evaluation

Busted! While we understand the frustration test takers can experience when they do not achieve the scores they need on their CELPIP Test, the scoring of the tests passes through different individuals, none of whom are able to see the other scoring components. This means that no one rater can see an entire test score, and the different components of the test are rated by different individuals. This is just one measure we take to ensure your test score is accurate, and properly measures your English language proficiency.

MYTH: Everyone that takes the CELPIP test needs to score 9

Busted! Different test takers need different scores, depending on their situation. The score requirements for immigration can differ from the score requirements for professional certification, so a 9 may not always be the goal for a test taker. In addition, the score requirements for permanent residency and citizenship are set not by Paragon Testing, but by the Canadian government. To learn more about what the score requirements are for immigration purposes, visit the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) website.

MYTH: There are a set number of mistakes I can make before I fail a component

Busted! The CELPIP is not a pass or fail test, and there is no number of mistakes you can make before you “fail” a component. Components themselves cannot be “failed” in that sense, unless you entirely do not input any answers. Rather, each of your responses to the Writing and Speaking components are rated according to our evaluation criteria. These criteria are established to accurately describe your English proficiency, and therefore “passing” or “failing” does not apply.

MYTH: The Speaking test evaluates your accent

Busted! The CELPIP Test does not evaluate your accent. All English speakers, regardless of their ability, speak with an accent, and no two English speakers from different parts of the world will have the same accent. Accents are simply a result of a variety of circumstances, and have no bearing on how your CELPIP Speaking component is evaluated. Our raters specifically do not consider your accent when rating your responses, and instead are focused on how you answer the questions of the tests, the range of words and phrases you use, and how you structure your response. For more information about preparing for the Speaking components of the CELPIP Test, see our speaking tips.

I had taken other English language proficiency before, and CELPIP was more relatable to me. All of the questions were situations I was familiar with from daily life, and were like conversations I had experienced personally.
